Acne is common among teens because of increased hormone production, but the fact that it’s common doesn’t make girls of this age any less self-conscious about acne or it’s affects on their appearance. While there are treatments for acne designed for teenagers, healthy skin starts with a healthy skincare regimen – one that teens can learn early and use throughout their whole life. Following these basic tips can help teens get healthier skin; and paired with an effective acne treatment for teens, they can greatly reduce the appearance of acne spots and even reduce scarring.

1. Don’t Over Wash

Many teens that have acne think that washing their face will help to clear up the problem. While washing one’s face is important, washing it too much can actually be damaging to the skin. That’s because when a person washes their face too much, they’re actually stripping the good oils that keep the skin healthy, causing the body to produce more. This overproduction of oil, known as sebum, will actually make acne worse. Limit washing your face to in the morning when you wake up, in the evening before bed, and after exercising or sweating heavily.

2. Avoid Popping Pimples

Pimples are generally aggravated areas of skin, and touching them can help to spread bacteria, making acne worse. Popping pimples, even if you use a pair of sterile tweezers or a specially designed needle, can actually push infected material under the surface of the skin further in, leading to more redness, irritation and swelling. Ideally, you want to avoid touching your face as much as possible, even with instruments used to pop and drain pimples.

3. Push Your Hair Back

Girls with long hair and bangs and boys with longer hair often have hair that touches their face. In many cases, this hair can actually make irritation related to acne worse. This is especially true if you use a lot of product in your hair. If you’re not willing to cut your hair, push it back whenever you can, and avoid using heavy petroleum-based products that can clog pores. It’s also important to keep your hair clean by washing it at least three times per week.

4. Use Acne Treatments Regularly

If you decide to use an over-the-counter acne treatment from a company like Lia Skincare, it’s important that you use your acne treatment regularly, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Using acne treatments on a regular basis can be helpful, but they may not work the right way if you use them less than recommended. You should also refrain from using acne treatments more often than directed by the manufacturer, as this may lead to some irritation and redness.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

While a bit different than all of the other tips, it’s important for teens to drink plenty of water when they have acne. That’s because regularly drinking water helps to keep the skin hydrated and less irritated. Consuming plenty of water also helps your skin fight bacterial infection by washing away free radicals in the body that can cause damage to the skin.

Following the steps above will help girls create an effective tween skin care routine that can evolve as they grow to include products they need and maintain healthy skin for life.
